The Art That Started the Adventure

Before a game ever appeared on the screen, its cover could already take us on an adventure. A painted hero, a mysterious landscape or a single striking symbol offered a glimpse of a world that our imaginations could explore long before we pressed Start.

A promise made in pictures

For many of us, choosing a game meant standing in front of a shelf and wondering what might be inside each box. The artwork could suggest a scale and atmosphere that the hardware of the time could only hint at. Sometimes the game lived up to that promise; sometimes the difference became part of the memory.

Different covers, different dreams

Great cover art did not need to follow one formula. The Super Mario Bros. 3 cover celebrated a familiar hero and a new way to fly. Sonic the Hedgehog introduced a character full of energy against a glimpse of his world. And one well-known The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past cover relied on a sword and shield to suggest an adventure waiting to be discovered. These are among the choices in GameSpot’s box-art selection.

Spain has its own rich history of game illustration. Hobby Consolas’ look at Spanish 8-bit covers celebrates artists including Alfonso Azpiri and Luis Royo, whose work appeared on games such as Abu Simbel Profanation and Navy Moves. Their illustrations are a reminder that the people who imagined these worlds on paper are part of gaming history too.

Which cover stayed with you?

There is no single greatest cover for everyone. One image might remind you of a birthday present; another might take you back to a game you saw in a shop but never got to play. In a retro gaming community discussion, players nominate favourites across systems and regions, showing just how personal those memories can be.

At That Old New Gamer, we want to revisit that feeling: to look at the art, imagine the adventure it promised, and explore what a playable world inspired by that feeling could become with today’s tools. This is the beginning of our journey, and we would love to hear which covers sparked your imagination.
